[Girdwood Collection of glass lantern slides, Niagara Falls and area]. [ca. 1850-1860]

The collection consists of 79 glass lantern slides. Fifteen of the slides are of various scenes of Niagara Falls, and are mounted and contain descriptions. Many of these appear to have been taken by the American photographer James Thomson. The remainder of the slides are of various scenes and contain no information about either the photographer or the location. The slides at one time belonged to Gilbert Prout Girdwood, a physician and chemist who was also a pioneer in the medical use of X-rays.
